14th Century

Temasek: Ancient Origins

Early records from the 14th century refer to the island as Temasek (Sea Town), part of the Srivijayan empire. Legends speak of a Sumatran prince who renamed it 'Singapura' (Lion City).

Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company established a trading post, strategically positioning Singapore as a key port along the trade routes between India and China, leading to rapid growth.

1942-1945
