Landing at Heathrow Airport next week. Should I buy an Oyster card or can I just tap my Apple Pay / contactless Visa card for the Tube and buses?

Just tap your contactless credit card or phone! It uses the exact same TfL price capping (daily & weekly cap) as the Oyster card, and saves you the £7 non-refundable Oyster deposit fee. https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1513635269975-59663e0ac1ad?w=800

Pro tip: make sure you tap in and tap out with the SAME device/card every time, otherwise you'll be charged maximum fare on separate cards!

Honestly, just stick with your contactless Visa or Apple Pay! The fares and daily price caps are exactly the same as an Oyster card, but you save the non-refundable £7 fee TfL now charges just to buy a physical Oyster card. I've been living in London for three years now and haven't touched my old Oyster card since. Since you're landing at Heathrow, you can tap your phone right at the Elizabeth Line gates. It costs around £13.30 to get straight into central London (like Tottenham Court Road or Paddington) in just over 30 minutes, which is much faster and more comfortable than taking the older Piccadilly Line. Two quick tips: check if your bank charges foreign transaction fees for international payments, and always use the exact same device to tap in and out. If you tap in with your phone and tap out with your smartwatch, TfL treats them as two separate cards and will charge you the maximum fare on both!

We want to see the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, London Eye, and the View from the Shard. Is the 3-day London Pass cost-effective?

If you visit at least 2 paid attractions per day (Tower of London + Westminster Abbey alone are £30+ each), the London Pass pays for itself! Plus it includes fast-track entries.

Honestly, for that specific list, the 3-day pass might only barely break even. The Tower of London (~£35), Westminster Abbey (~£29), St Paul's (~£25), and View from the Shard (~£32) are included and total around £121. However, double-check the current listings for 2026 because the London Eye is a Merlin attraction and usually isn't covered by the standard London Pass, meaning you'd have to pay £38+ out of pocket for that anyway. My advice as a local? Don't pay for both the Shard and the London Eye. Instead, book a free slot at Horizon 22 or Sky Garden in advance. They're right near St Paul's and the Tower, offering arguably better views of the city skyline without spending a penny. If you drop the paid view decks, your remaining big sites (Tower, Abbey, St Paul's) only come out to around £89 total—far less than the ~£130 price tag of a 3-day London Pass. You'll save money and have a much more relaxed trip by just buying individual timed tickets online!
