Is NYC subway safe late at night in 2026?
We'll be attending Broadway shows ending around 11 PM. Is taking the subway back to Brooklyn or Upper West Side safe, or should we take Uber?

Subways after Broadway shows are packed with theatergoers, so stations like Times Square and Columbus Circle are very safe. Just stay aware of your surroundings and sit in the conductor's car (middle of the train) if riding late!

As someone living in Park Slope and commuting back late from the theatre district regularly, 11 PM isn't really 'late night' by NYC standards, especially right after Broadway shows wrap up. The stations around Times Square will still be packed with fellow theatergoers heading home. Taking the 1, 2, or 3 train up to the Upper West Side or down into Brooklyn is generally very safe.
That said, basic subway awareness applies: keep your head up, avoid empty cars, and aim for the middle car where the train conductor is stationed if you want extra peace of mind. The subway is only $2.90 using OMNY tap-to-pay, whereas an Uber or Lyft back to Brooklyn at that hour can easily hit $50โ$75 with post-show surge pricing.
Unless you're extremely exhausted or carrying a lot of heavy luggage, save your money and stick to the subway!
