Antarctica looks like a frozen, lifeless desert. But underneath, something is moving. Satellites just found 85 hidden lakes under the ice, and nobody knew they were there. It took ten years for the CryoSat satellite to spot the ice surface rising and sinking above them. The total number of known active subglacial lakes under Antarctica is now 231, a 58% jump in a single study. These lakes are not sitting still. They fill up slowly, then drain again in a cycle.
